About

A small consultancy of experienced engineers

Half Bell is a UK software consultancy founded in 2026 on a simple idea: the people you talk to should be the people who build your software, and they should take responsibility for all of it.

Why we set up Half Bell

Organisations that need bespoke software usually choose between a large agency, where experienced people sell the work and less experienced people do it, and a freelancer, who may be excellent but is one person with one set of skills.

We set up Half Bell to sit in between: a deliberately small team of experienced engineers who have built and run production software inside large technology and financial organisations. We bring the same habits to smaller projects: clear scope, automated tests, careful security, honest reporting, and software someone else can maintain after we've gone.

We price work in fixed milestones, so you can stop at any point with something that works.

The team

  • David Lass

    Founder and delivery lead

  • Varun Gupta

    Software engineer

  • Uliana Bystritsckaia

    Software engineer

Between us, we've built production software at Amazon, Microsoft, Meta, Morgan Stanley and Shell.

Former employers of members of our team. They are not clients and do not endorse Half Bell.

What we believe

  • Small steps beat big plans

Short milestones with working software expose problems while they're still cheap to fix.

  • Boring technology, on purpose

We choose mainstream tools your future team can hire for, not whatever is newest.

  • Say what's real

Every demo, update and estimate says plainly what works, what's simulated and what's still to build.

Let's discuss what you need

A free 30-minute consultation with the people who would do the work. We'll tell you plainly whether we're the right firm for it, and what a fixed-price first step would look like.
